Locating Congested Segments over the Internet Based on Multiple End-to-End Path Measurements

چکیده
Since congestion is very likely to happen in the Internet, locating congested areas (path segments) along a congested path is vital to appropriate actions by Internet Service Providers to mitigate or prevent network performance degradation. We propose a practical method to locate congested segments by actively measuring one-way end-to-end packet losses on appropriate paths from multiple origins to multiple destinations, using a network tomographic approach. Then we conduct a long-term experiment measuring packet losses on multiple paths over the Japanese commercial Internet. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method is able to precisely locate congested segments. Some findings on congestion over the Japan Internet are also given based on the experiment. key words: packet loss, active measurement, locating congestion, network tomography

Diagnosing Spatio-Temporal Internet Congestion Properties
The ability to accurately detect congestion events in the Internet and reveal their spatial (where they happen) and temporal (how long they last) properties would significantly improve our understanding of how the Internet operates. In this paper we present Pong, a novel measurement tool capable of effectively diagnosing congestion events over short time-scales (∼ 50 ms or longer), and simultan...
متن کاملFingerprinting Internet Paths using Packet Pair Dispersion
Path fingerprinting is an essential component of applications that distinguish among different network paths, including path selection in overlay networks, multi-path routing, monitoring and diagnosis of network problems, and developing a deeper understanding of network behavior. This paper proposes a new approach to Internet path fingerprinting based on the distribution of end-to-end packet-pa...
متن کاملSegment based Inter-networking to Accommodate Diversity at the Edge
In this paper, we introduce Tapa, a network architecture that accommodates diversity at the network edge: different access networks, heterogeneous edge devices, and rich applications and network services. The core idea underlying Tapa is to have network segments replace IP links as the basis for inter-operability in the Internet. A segment spans a part of the end-to-end path that can be conside...
متن کاملReliable video communication over lossy packet networks using multiple state encoding and path diversity
Video communication over lossy packet networks such as the Internet is hampered by limited bandwidth and packet loss. This paper presents a system for providing reliable video communication over these networks, where the system is composed of two subsystems: (1) multiple state video encoder/decoder and (2) a path diversity transmission system. Multiple state video coding combats the problem of ...
